New Year...New Tips!

Although academics is the foundation in a college career, there are so many options and possibilities to truly enrich your experience. In response to that conversation, I created a list of a few ways to get involved on Ashland’s campus.

Groups Relating to Your Major - There are several organizations that revolve around a particular field of study. There’s Art Club, Social Work Club, Spanish Club, Psychology Club, etc. These clubs are a great way to learn from others in your major, find support for classes, and gain some experience throughout your college experience!

Sports/Exercise Groups - Outside of Ashland University Athletics, there are several opportunities to participate in a particular sport or activity. The Rec offers both Intramural and Club sport options. For example, some students join co-ed volleyball and soccer teams.

Greek Life - I may be biased but I believe Greek Life is one of the best things to be a part of. There are four fraternities and four sororities on campus. Greek Life as a whole is a community that offers different activities throughout the year. Each chapter is unique with different philanthropies, values, and events. Being part of a sorority/fraternity provides opportunities in community service, new friendships, and leadership roles. There are multiple positions in each chapter where an individual can gain valuable leadership experience and work towards a common goal! (P.S. If you’re interested in going Greek, registration ends September 20, at noon)

The Arts - Every person in the world is creative. Although areas and degree of talent differ among people, there is an option for everyone. Ashland offers a variety of outlets to be active in the arts. There are several musical organizations such as Jazz Orchestra, Band, and Choir. For those interested in performing, Ashland’s theatre is very active throughout each semester. Whether it is costume design, performing on stage, or working in other behind the scenes areas, the Center for the Arts is an amazing creative outlet. If I were to list every opportunity in the Arts, this post would turn into a book. I suggest walking over to CFA and seeing all they have to offer!

Religious Life - Ashland University has a vibrant religious life on campus. Some example of religious groups include The WELL, Young Life, and Newman Catholic Campus Ministries. Not only can an individual gain growth in his or her spiritual life, he or she can bond and connect with multiple students on campus.

Service - An amazing way to be involved is to give back to the community. A.U. GIVS and Habitat for Humanity are both amazing organizations that are dedicated to serving the community. A.U. GIVS organizes several events throughout the semester. To keep everyone in the loop, an email newsletter is available for students. I have been to quite a few events and I absolutely love it!

Unique Clubs - Even if there is nothing on this list that appeals to you, there are still several other organizations. There are so many clubs and groups that appeal to various interests and passions. To name a few, Ashland offers Anime Club, Co Ed Quidditch, Ashland College Democrats, College Republicans, and Eagles for Pride. There are is an amazing varieties of groups. There is an entire list of organizations on Ashland’s website. I can guarantee there will be at least one organization that appeals to you.

Coming to college can be an overwhelming experience, but it doesn’t have to be. Joining an organization or volunteering can simply become a support system. Going through college alone isn’t fun. Get out there, make some friends, make a difference, and have some fun! Getting involved can open a variety of doors for you. Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself this year!
